Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the foundation of data communication on the World Wide Web. It is an application protocol that governs the transmission of data between a web server and a web browser. HTTP defines how requests and responses should be formatted and processed.

When a user accesses a web page, their web browser sends an HTTP request to the web server hosting the page. The server then responds with an HTTP response containing the requested content. HTTP is the protocol that enables users to navigate the internet, retrieve web pages, and interact with web applications. It is the basis for the URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) that users use to access web resources.
